A familiar classroom character steps out of the workbook and into real-time animation. Working with Cradle (the digital research and innovation lab of the Academy for AI, Games and Media at BUas), Professor Duurzaam became a digital avatar that can ask a question, react to a child's answer, and hold attention on screen.

Professor Duurzaam is an educational initiative based in Breda that helps children between the ages of 7 and 12 understand sustainability and the impact of their own choices. The programme runs on guest lessons and workshops where children explore themes such as energy, waste, and transport, and build a small gadget to take home so the conversation continues with their parents. 

Cradle worked with founder Roy van Wel to extend that approach into a new format. The question we set out to answer was a practical one: can a recognisable educational character become a real-time virtual human that holds children's attention and invites them to take part? 

From character to avatar 

The starting point was the existing Professor Duurzaam brand. Our digital artists designed and modelled a high-quality 3D version of the character, keeping it faithful to the look children already recognise. The model was then rigged for both body and facial animation so it could perform a full range of expressions and gestures. 

Capturing the performance 

To give the avatar lifelike movement, we used motion capture on our stage at BUas. A professional actress performed the character's body movements and facial expressions, and that performance was mapped onto the digital model. Driving the animation from a live performance preserves the timing and the small human details that make a character feel present on screen. 

Interactive video modules 

The avatar was built for a specific teaching format. In short video modules, Professor Duurzaam poses a sustainability question and offers children a set of answers to choose from. The character then responds to the choice, with encouragement when an answer is correct and friendly guidance when one needs a second look. That turns a one-way explainer into a small exchange, closer to how the live lessons already work. 

All modules were produced with real-time rendering, which shortens turnaround and keeps the visuals consistent across a series of clips. The same pipeline can scale to more modules as the programme grows. 

Tech for Good 

For BUas, the value of this collaboration sits in applying emerging technology to a real social question. Sustainability education is a long-term challenge, and tools that make it more engaging for children have a clear purpose. Bringing Professor Duurzaam to life as a virtual human shows what that can look like in practice: technology used to help children learn, remember, and carry the conversation home.
