When did you graduate from MGT, and what were you doing before joining the master's programme?

Jonas: ‘I did my Master's in Game Technology at BUas from 2019 to 2020. Before diving into the master's programme, I pursued a Bachelor of Science study in Game Design at the Media Design University of Applied Sciences in Dusseldorf, Germany. My focus was on game design and narrative design.’

Could you tell us about your research project?

Jonas: ‘During my master's, I focused on game and narrative design, exploring how conflicts in games affect player empathy towards Non-Player-Characters (NPCs). I created a basic online tactical game where players had to navigate conflicts within their team. Surprisingly, I found that these conflicts enhanced player engagement and emotional connection (both positive and negative) with the characters. It reaffirmed the importance of conflict in creating meaningful player experiences.’

What are some of your best memories from your time at BUas?

Jonas: ‘One memorable aspect was the collaborative spirit among the master's students during our questionnaires and test runs. We were all engaged in various projects, sharing insights and experiences.’

What did you do after the MGT programme?

Jonas: ‘My passion for research led me to look for appealing research positions, but I ultimately ended up getting a job in the games industry first.’

‘I joined Gaming Minds Studios in Germany as a Game Designer, focusing on a historical economy management game called Railway Empire 2. In this role, I had the opportunity to shape the game's narrative by writing the dialogues and missions. Over the course of three years, I dedicated myself to this project, immersing myself in its development alongside a team of around twenty people.’

What are you doing now?

Jonas: ‘Currently, I'm embarking on a Professional Doctorate (PD) programme at BUas, delving deeper into player relations within game characters. Looking ahead, I aspire to collaborate with leading gaming companies, leveraging my expertise to drive innovation and meaningful change within the industry. Establishing connections with industry professionals, such as developers from RimWorld, is a priority on my agenda. One of their developers is actually my supervisor for the PD.’

What advice do you have for people considering the MGT?

Jonas: ‘For aspiring MGT candidates, I'd emphasize the importance of self-direction and research acumen. The programme offers ample opportunities for independent exploration, supported by the university. Taking ownership of your projects and responsibilities is key to making the most of your experience.'
