When did you graduate from MGT, and what were you doing before joining the master's programme?

Femke: ‘I graduated from the Master Game Technology programme in 2019. Before to that, I completed my bachelor's degree in CMGT (then IGAD) at BUas in 2018. Despite being a bachelor graduate, I wasn't quite ready to embark on a career path yet. Many opportunities in the industry require relocation, and I was undecided about that prospect. So, I opted for the master's programme to continue studying and further develop my portfolio.’

Could you tell us about your research project in the MGT programme?

Femke: ‘My master's research focused on grooming and fur simulation. The original research question I formulated was: “Which factors are most influential according to industry experts in the creation and simulation of pre-rendered fur on an animated character?” I created a 3D model of my own dog and explored how to make its fur appear believable. It was quite a niche specialisation, but I thought it would open up numerous opportunities in the industry post-graduation.’

‘I conducted interviews with industry professionals to gather insights. There was limited knowledge about grooming techniques in the industry. I compiled my findings into an article, highlighting aspects such as hair length, volume, and direction of the hair, which are often overlooked in digital creations. This research paved the way for my career, ultimately leading me to Axis Studios in Scotland, where I worked on various projects, including trailers for League of Legends and Magic the Gathering, and the animation movie Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022).’

What are some of your best memories from your time at BUas?

Femke: ‘One of the highlights of my time at BUas was the sense of community among like-minded people. Being surrounded by others who shared my interests created a supportive and enriching environment. Also, I feel like the lecturers were our personal cheerleaders. They were always rooting for you and making you motivated for your own projects.’

What are you doing now?

Femke: ‘Currently, I've transitioned into a different role. While being a grooming artist was enjoyable, my passion lies in concept art and art direction. I'm now working at Stitch Heads, where I have the opportunity to explore this passion further. With a smaller team and more creative freedom, I've now taken on the role of concept artist.’

What advice do you have for people considering the MGT?

Femke: ‘If you are considering the Master Game Technology programme, my advice is to seize every opportunity and take ownership of your journey. For example, during my time in the programme, I travelled to Los Angeles to visit Disney and DreamWorks studios, where I talked to several industry professionals. I learned a lot from this oppurtunity. Being ambitious and proactive can lead to incredible experiences. While BUas provides good support, it's essential to take initiative and pursue your goals relentlessly.’
