Can you share a bit about your journey leading up to BUas?

Makis: ‘My journey into the world of visual effects began in the early days of computer graphics when games programmes, like the one here at BUas, were still a thing of the future. As a child, I delved into programming to create graphics, igniting my passion for the field. I pursued this passion professionally, starting as a generalist in an animation company. Learning was through trial and error, sharing knowledge, and self-invention.’

‘Over the years, I transitioned from being a generalist in 3D to specialising in compositing, set supervision and post-production. My career took me to various companies, including a company called ACE Image Factory in Brussels, where I was involved in co-productions with countries like the Netherlands, Germany, UK, France, US.’

‘Throughout my professional journey, I found joy in sharing knowledge, which led me to a career switch into academia. The opportunity at BUas aligned perfectly with my ethos of learning through sharing, and I joined last August (2023) to commence the academic year.’

What aspects of working at BUas and with the VFX programme do you find most fulfilling?

Makis: ‘The camaraderie among colleagues at BUas is truly remarkable. I find immense satisfaction in working with passionate students, particularly those in the Film Visual Effects track. Their enthusiasm for their projects is infectious, and being involved in their creative journey is incredibly rewarding. Whether collaborating on projects or guiding them through their courses, witnessing their dedication is a highlight of my role as a lecturer.’

Could you provide insights into the projects and courses you've been involved in?

Makis: ‘Currently, I'm involved in a variety of projects and courses at BUas. One notable project is a short film based on the comic "Tremen," directed by our talented alumnus Pim Bos. Students from year three are leading the production, showcasing their skills and creativity.’

‘In terms of courses, the curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in 3D modelling, animation, compositing, and more. We utilise industry-standard programs like Maya, Houdini, and Nuke, ensuring students are well-equipped for the demands of the industry.’  ’

‘I draw from my industry experience to enrich the learning experience, providing practical insights and hands-on guidance. Recently, first-year students have been tasked with animating characters and integrating them on live footage, applying their skills and creativity to bring their visions to life.’
