On 9 September, it was exactly 30 years since the very first PlayStation was launched in the United States. Over the past three decades, gaming has become far more than a source of entertainment. Beyond this commercial success, an increasing number of academic studies are shedding light on the positive impact games can have on learning and personal development. Research by Vélez and Herrero (2022), for example, highlights how commercial video games can enhance language learning, scientific understanding, and historical knowledge. By immersing players in rich, interactive worlds, these games stimulate reading comprehension, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills – all vital abilities that transfer directly to real-life situations.

The benefits, however, extend well beyond cognitive growth. Studies show that gaming can improve hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and spatial awareness, particularly through fast-paced action and sports games. Meanwhile, collaborative and online games encourage social interaction, communication, and teamwork. Perhaps most importantly, gaming has been linked to improved mental wellbeing: offering relaxation, emotional regulation, social connection, and even a sense of achievement and purpose. Organisations such as Special Effect, for instance, are working hard to make gaming more accessible and to extend these benefits to people with disabilities.

Gaming is no longer just a multi-billion-pound industry. It has become a versatile platform for learning, growth, and connection. And despite the challenges highlighted in a recent NPO article, the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks.
